Canadian PE teacher James Naismith was looking for an indoor sport to keep his students occupied and fit throughout the winter, and in 1891 basketball was born.
Originally the net had a bottom, so someone had to retrieve the ball after each basket! A brown ball was also used initially until the late 1950s, at which point the iconic orange ball was created. It was around this time that dribbling was also added into the game and became the basketball that is so popular all over the world today.

3 reasons to get into Basketball
Basketball fundamentals are easy to pick up
If your kids know how to run, bounce the ball and throw it at the net, then they’ve got the basics down! They can build on these skills whilst having fun and getting some good exercise too.
Basketball can be played alone or in a team
Shooting hoops by yourself can be just as fun as playing with your friends. Your children could spend hours trying to sink that perfect basket, or spend hours with their friends playing small 3 on 3 games!
Basketball is a great all round workout for your kids!
Nothing will tire your kids out like playing basketball. It requires effort from the whole body, which means they’ll be training all the muscles in their body. It’s not just physical though, as they’ll be developing things like hand-eye coordination as well!
Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game.
