Everyone remembers learning to ride a bike...being pushed along by their parents, wobbling all over the place, a few grazed elbows..but we all got there in the end!

Bicycles were introduced in the 19th century as a means of transportation. The first race on record was held in 1868 and was won by Englishman James Moore, who had a bike with solid rubber tyres! These days, there are a whole load of different disciplines including BMX, mountain and track to name just a few. Us Brits have been lucky enough to produce the most successful Olympic cyclist in the form of Sir Chris Hoy.

Did you know?

Want to know how popular cycling is? Well, around half the world's population is said to watch TV coverage of the Tour de France, which is broadcast to 188 countries! Turns out it's wheelie popular...

3 reasons to get into Cycling

  • Cycling lets you enjoy healthy family time

The whole family can enjoy cycling together. Even the smallest of kids can fit into a bike seat - we're willing to bet you've seen loads of kids being cycled along by their parents! When they're old enough, they can climb onto their own bikes and join in. We're lucky to have a lot of scenic places to cycle in the UK, so let's make use of them!

  • Cycling increases brain power

Believe it or not this is true! The kind of exercise that cycling will give your kids helps build new brain cells in the area of the brain responsible for memory. All kinds of professionals also use exercise to solve mental blocks and make decisions -- including Jeremy Paxman, Sir Alan Sugar and Spandau Ballet!

  • Cycling can become a lifestyle

Your kids can choose to do various different disciplines of cycling, but no other activity can change their life like cycling can - it can be a form of transport for them too. Instead of them driving when they're of age, they'll prefer to cycle everywhere! A lot of cities have a big cycling culture, with lots of lanes and roads specifically for cyclists. Money will be saved, and their fitness will increase!

One of the most important days of my life was when I learned to ride a bicycle.
